Winter CSA

Finn Meadows Farm Winter CSA 2017-2018

Please note: We are no longer farming at Aberlin Springs.

Thursday 3-6pm, but if you can’t make it then come later in the day or later in the week. We will be at the Hyde Park Winter Farmers Market at Clark Montessori on Sundays through December as long as there is a harvest. You can also use your credits there. The winter CSA runs from November 2nd until the third week of May. Availability depends on the season, the weather, and what we have planted. The available items will rotate in and out, and we will do our best job at extending the season. This CSA includes meat, vegetables, and eggs. We will have pastured pork most of the winter, poultry available that has been frozen and left over from the summer season, and there will be beef through much of the winter. Winter credits can be used for Thanksgiving turkeys as well.

Produce will likely include:

Broccoli                           Lettuce                       Other Greens
Asian Greens mix             Spinach                      Winter Squash
Kale                                Cauliflower                  Swiss chard
Mizuna                            Radishes                     Cabbage
Carrots                           Turnips                        Mustard Greens
Beets                              Arugula                       Maybe some sweet potatoes and potatoes

You are expected to pick up your share once a week. If you can’t make it during the official pick up time, you are allowed to come late or in the following days, but the best produce available is during the official pick up. In the winter, we can only harvest about once a week because plants don’t grow nearly as quickly as in the summer due to the lack of light. There will likely be a break from pickups when our harvest slows down, but we will keep you updated via email if this happens. Expect there to be some vegetable breaks starting at the end of December and continuing to February.

The Winter CSA is a total of 29 weeks, but we have factored in a few weeks of time off to account for weather related veggie shortages and some vacation time for ourselves. So you are expected to come to the farm for a total of 26 weeks, provided we have a harvest. We will communicate over email frequently.

How do credits work?

The cost structure is the same as last season. The extra credits we provide will be distributed over the course of 6 months to encourage members to shop each week. (You may move past our targets – ie if you’re a half share and your credits are at $250 by December 16, you will still get the same bonus). We will do the math for you at the end of each goal period. Adding more credits doesn’t hinder your ability to get a bonus. So let’s say you get a half share. You pay $325. In November you start with $325. If by December 16 you are down to $260, you get an extra $9 to spend on your credit board. If by January 20 you are down to $190, you get another $9 to spend. And so on. If you stay on target (or below target) until the end of the season, you will have accumulated the 10% extra in credits, which can also be thought of as a discount. You have from the beginning of November until the third week in May to spend the initial share purchased. The credits are all on an honor system and you will have a worksheet to track your work. This will all be explained to new members during a short orientation session.

Credits will expire on May 17, 2018.

Please note: We do not allow split shares. The credits you purchase are for you and your immediate family only. We believe that a commitment of at least a half share is necessary for the program to thrive. The reason for this belief is that the year is long and involves many changes and ups and downs. We need people in this program that are committed to weekly farm eating so that we can sell our midweek harvests rain or shine. Your friends or neighbors must buy a separate CSA share if they would like to use the credit system. If you feel that the CSA commitment is too big, you may want to try visiting us at the farmers market instead.

Our hope is that we will attract people who want to eat most everything from the farm – both vegetables and meat when they are in season.

You can always reload your credits once they run out. We will offer you the same initial discount.

We are developing this farm with the hopes of creating a small close community based on trust, including operating under the “honor system” for shopping.  With violations of trust, we reserve the right to not reload credits once they are all used.
